This block-style quilt uses the four-patch pattern as its foundation and each four-patch block is string or strip pieced. The way the quilter set the blocks with solid dark red sashing makes them appear to float. Hand-quilted in utilitarian clam-shell design. This scrap quilt is dressed up by two borders-one in which squares of brown check or plain-weave fabrics alternate with squares of muslin-and a second border of denim-colored cotton is turned to the back to create the quilt’s border. A combination of machine and hand piecing, this quilt bears evidence of one quilter changing her mind or two quilters at work. It appears that someone started quilting in the clam shell design and then switched to a different patter.
