McKissick Museum Collection 6.1992
Hand-stitched and quilted, applique block-style, two-color quilt in red and green cotton with pieced, geometric, zig-zag border. Batting is cotton with pieced, geometric, zig-zag border. Batting is cotton and backing white cotton. This quilt came to McKissick with a tan paper bag with pink card and blue ribbon pinned to a corner. Printed on the card: “Anderson fair entry tag exhibition no. 15, list no. 15, entry quilt 150 years old. Present this to the secretary to get your premium money.” It was not unusual for a county fair to offer premiums for “antiques” such as this visually stunning masterpiece to recognize the talents of women and men of previous generations.
